Local History Department Receives Multiple Grants

We are pleased to announce that we have received grant funding for the following projects, which will make our collections of local history materials even more accessible to our patrons and  researchers.

ALA American Rescue Plan Grant for $10,000 for the inventory and cataloging of the oversized materials in the Local History Department collection. This includes architectural drawings, maps, blueprints, etc.

WNYLRC Access and Innovation Grant, $8,315 to digitize the Niagara Gazette from 1916-1928. Newspapers will be available on http://www.nyshistoricnewspapers.org once digitization is completed. (We currently have the Niagara Gazette digitized from May 1854-July 1916.)

Humanities New York with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, $5,000 towards the digitization and virtual exhibit of various local history interviews and presentations on the history of Niagara Falls and the community. These work as a sort of oral history of the Niagara Falls area and are historically valuable to the community. The information on these tapes includes first-hand experiences of different types of individuals who lived in the city. It also includes information on different populations of the city (ex: Polish community, African American community, and more) as well as a series of television interviews hosted by Don King. This digitized collection will be available to the public via the Library’s website and inside the library. Our project aims to be completed by April 2024.

Niagara Falls Public Library receives a federal grant to provide residents with secure, confidential access to telehealth.

The Niagara Falls Public Library has received a federal grant that will give all residents the opportunity to utilize telehealth services. The National Institutes of Health’s Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) All of Us National Program awarded the Niagara Falls Public Library $28,937 in federal funding for its “NFPL Create Your Healthy Life” project.

With the funding, the NFPL has installed sound-dampening booths on the first floor computer area of the Main Library for library users to research health topics and conduct telehealth appointments. The booths will feature state-of-the-art computers equipped with cameras and microphones to give residents an opportunity to privately connect with doctors through telehealth.

Librarians will be fully trained on the new equipment to ensure their ability to properly assist users. Residents will have the opportunity to reserve these booths for use. The award also includes a one-year subscription to Gale Health and Wellness, an online database with easy-to-use health information. It offers 24/7 access to medical journals, magazines, reference works, and multimedia resources.

This award is supported by funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health under cooperative agreement number UG4 LM012346-05S1 at the University of Iowa, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.
