LIBRARY SETS GREEN THEME FOR MARCH

In March, green is everywhere. It is in the minds of people who, tired of the dull winter landscape, eagerly anticipate the green of new spring growth. In stores, decorations of shamrocks and leprechauns dressed in green outfits remind us of the approach of St. Patrick's Day. In the Niagara Falls Public Library, "green books" remind us of the importance of green issues such as global warming, sustainable living and building practices, vanishing wildlife habitat, and recycling. Choose a book from our March display and learn how you and your country can take measures to make the world greener. Don't hesitate to ask a librarian for help in locating items on your favorite "green theme" or any other topic about which you may have an interest.

TAX FORMS AND MORE AVAILABLE FROM LIBRARY

It seems like the income tax season just ended, but that time of year is upon us once again and the library is here to help. The Internal Revenue Service and NY State have sent us a large variety of the most-used tax forms, and they are available for anyone to pick up at the library free of charge. Even many difficult-to-find specialized forms for both individuals and small businesses are available. They come to us as a reproducible form that anyone can copy on the duplicating machines locating on the main floor of the library. For users who have access to the Internet, the library has posted links that let you get forms, instructions and tax publications from both the Internal Revenue Service and the New York State Department of Taxation. Just look under "Featured Internet Sites" on the library's home page at www.niagarafallspubliclib.org.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH RECOGNIZED

Born December 19, 1875, Carter G. Woodson, the son of former slaves and a child worker in the coal mines of Kentucky, first enrolled in high school at the age of twenty. After graduating in two years, he earned a Ph. D from Harvard. As he studied, Woodson began to realize that the struggles and achievements of African-Americans were largely ignored. To correct this void, he pushed for recognition of the role African-Americans have played in the history of our country. As a result of his efforts, the United States first commemorated black history for a week in February, 1926. Now celebrated during the entire month of February, the month of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, Black History Month provides Americans with the opportunity to discover and reinforce the contributions African-Americans have made in all areas of our government and culture. On your next trip to the library, please browse our African-American Collection. Ask any librarian for help in locating the many books, periodicals and other materials that are in the collection for your use.
