ACCESS TO THE

LOCAL HISTORY DEPARTMENT

As of March 23, 2009, the Local History Department is closed to the public until further notice. However, anyone desiring to use materials within the department will be accommodated by arranging with the department head a specific time to be admitted to the department to use said materials. This can be done in several ways, as follows:

  1. Anyone can call the department at 286-4899 and leave any request for an appointment as a voice mail. I check the voice mail every morning and afternoon and respond to all calls as soon as I can.
  2. Anyone can send an e-mail to the department with requests for information and/or an appointment to come in to use the materials in the department. I check the e-mail at least twice a day and respond immediately by e-mail to all requests for information about the department.
  3. Anyone, as is posted, can call the Reference Desk at 286 - 4881 or 4884 to speak with the reference librarian on duty (55 hours per week). The reference librarian can often help the patron with materials on the first floor, such as use of the newspapers, city directories and census on microfilm, as well as with books or other materials held on the first floor. In addition, certain materials can be brought down to the first floor, such as newspapers that are not on microfilm, etc. (Very often patrons do not need to come to the third floor Local History Dept. but can very often satisfy their informational requests in this manner.)

If a patron needs further assistance, the librarians are instructed to give the patron my personal cell phone number to contact me for an appointment to be assisted in the Local History Department. I have made myself available for the 55 hours that the library is open - this includes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings till 9:00 PM as well as Saturdays from 9 to 5 PM.
